Each year, almost 300 million tons of plastic are produced and more than eight million tons of plastic are thrown into our oceans.
Once in the ocean, this plastic is broken down into fragments known as micro-plastics,
which pose a toxic threat to any sea creature that ingests them. Other animals get entangled in larger pieces and drown.
Unfortunately, plastic waste ends up killing more than one million seabirds and more than 100,000 marine mammals each year. While all these deaths are tragic, the BBC documentary "Blue Planet II" highlights a particularly devastating consequence of ocean pollution with its images of an agonizing whale mother.
In the video, you can see the pilot whale carrying her dead newborn, which she had been doing for several days.
